From the beginning, this home, built by Empire Custom Builders was designed to create a crisp and clean aesthetic. The architecture both incorporates and enhances natural elements, such as stone, wood and natural light. Oak & Broad worked to complete the look with 6” wide Black Walnut flooring throughout the home, which was finished on site with Rubio Monocoat for an eco-friendly and durable surface.
What is Rubio Monocoat?
At Oak & Broad, we create custom stains and use a variety of products to meet the needs of our clients. For this project, we used Rubio Monocoat, which is a unique all-natural old wood floor finish that doesn’t include any chemicals or release any VOCs. The oil stains adhere well to the wood and provide a lasting finish that will protect your floors without introducing harsh chemicals into your space. This product was the perfect choice for the homeowners who wanted to create a safe and welcoming interior environment.
While some want to enhance the wood grain and rustic feel of Black Walnut flooring, others prefer to downplay these characteristics. This project used “select & better” grade products to create a cleaner look that highlights the contrasting hues without playing them up too much. Ultimately, this served as another detail that added to the overall clean and streamlined look of the entire home.
The choice of wide plank Black Walnut Flooring provided a rich accent that also helped to make the rooms look more spacious. As the images below show, the flooring is paired with a variety of darker and lighter woods. The Black Walnut mixes nicely with all these different materials to create a visually appealing home that makes excellent use of both artificial and natural light to highlight color variations.
