Popular Hardwood Floor Designs Moving into 2019

November 4, 2018 By Oak & Broad Team

Being a homeowner means that you can design the home any way you choose. Some homeowners prefer wallpaper than paint, while others prefer hardwood floors to tile.

It’s all about what you like.

In fact, hardwood floor sales have increased thanks to home projects. Over 40 percent of contractors saw a significant sales growth in 2016. In 2018, 77 percent expect wood-flooring sales to continue to grow.

With 2018 whittling down, you’re running out of time to get those end-of-the-year projects done. If you’re waiting, here are the popular hardwood floor designs making their way into 2019.

Grey Is the New Brown

Gone are the days of having a straight brown hardwood floor design. A trend emerged where people purchased a brown or beige hardwood floor with a touch of grey.

Thus the term “greige” was born.

To stain your grey floor, use hardwood flooring refinishers. It’ll cost more than your standard type of refinishing, but for those wanting to keep the grey looking nice, it’s worth it.

Staining the floor is challenging and should be done by an expert. There are certifications available from various stain manufactures to let you know your technician is properly trained. Some of it is branding and marketing but it also means they spent time learning the right methods to use.

The Oaks

White Oak and Hickory continue to remain strong amongst homeowners. Lighter toned hardwoods like Maple and Birch aren’t as popular but still used for those seeking a more contemporary look. Exotics took a hit like bamboo.

Trendier hardwoods replaced the Brazilian Cherry hardwood floor designs.

Factory prefinished floors remain a popular selection for fast on-site installation. Why? Because it’s faster to complete and is ready almost immediately instead of waiting for finishes to cure. Custom colors are still best served with a site stain and finish.

Longer Length Hardwood Floor Designs

Have you heard of wide plank flooring? Homeowners prefer their appearance since it helps open up rooms that look small.

Longer lengths are more traditional, which is why they continue to be a trend. Be wary of wide plank flooring that has lengths under 2′. Its important to have long pieces so the floor wont look patchy.

Patterns

Think outside the box and try something different. A popular wood floor idea is a contrasting pattern. Use two similar colors or use one hue with different cuts like Herringbone or Chevron. Both of these patterns are popular.

Wire-Brushed

A wire-brushed hardwood floor involves scraping the wood planks with a hard-bristled wire brush. The end result gives the floor a textured finish instead of perfectly smooth.

By going with wire-brushed flooring, you can achieve a more beautiful custom look in your home.

Painted Hardwood

Who says that the hardwood can’t match the wall color? Warm up your home and make it feel like you’re living in a country cottage with painted floors.

Not sure where to start? Consider going with a white, green, or gray for a base that will go with any home decor.

Now that you know what the popular hardwood floor designs are, it’s time to decide. What type and color would look best in your home? Are you looking for more of a beach theme or country cottage?
