The total cost of your wood flooring project will include both materials and installation. In some cases your installer will charge more for installation than your wood flooring materials. There are several methods of wood flooring installation and all are covered in great detail by the National Wood Flooring Association in Chesterfield Missouri. They are usually going to be the primary resource for all things installation or manufacturing related.
We will examine several installation options in this article and why they will cost different amounts based on what you need for your home. Typically your contractor will specify if you need a Solid or an Engineered wood floor. Installation costs very around the country but we will share some of the costs that have been shared with us.
Installation of wood flooring “below grade” in the basement or in humid parts of the country will typically require Engineered wood flooring. This type of installation is often a glue down installation, especially if its over concrete. For this installation your cost will be labor along with the adhesive needed for gluing the flooring to the concrete. Its very important to make sure your installer is using a hardwood flooring adhesive that includes a moisture retarder for this kind of installation. A rate of $2.75-$3.75 is pretty standard. Please note this is just for installation. Finishing can be several more dollars per SQ FT.
For Solid hardwood flooring especially over 5″ in width you will need to have the floors both nailed and glued as part of installation. That is because the wider planks are more likely to move or respond to seasonal and humidity changes in the home. The two adhesion methods are to help lessen that natural phenomenon. This type of installation is typically $3-$4 per SQ FT. When you are selecting an installer for your wide plank hardwood floors make sure to ask them about their experience installing wide plank hardwood flooring. Ask to see their portfolio and even references from previous projects. They should be happy to show and share these things with you.
