How Much Does Hardwood Flooring Cost to Install?

November 14, 2018 By Oak & Broad Team

According to a 2018 report, homeowners spent, on average, about $6,500 over the course of 12 months to renovate their homes.

Renovating a home can be done for many reasons, such as to make it feel more modern or to boost the value of your home. But some renovations get you more bang for your buck when compared to others.

Nothing can make a home look more high-end than replacing carpet with hardwood flooring. But how much does hardwood flooring cost? Keep reading to find out!

Hardwood Flooring Cost: Comparing Wood Styles

The cost of installing hardwood flooring can vary immensely. How much you’ll spend will depend on the square footage of hardwood flooring you wish to install, and what type of wood you want.

Oak Flooring

One of the most popular types of hardwood flooring is oak wood. You can choose between red oak flooring and white oak flooring.

Red oak flooring will cost about $2 to $6 dollars per square foot, while white oak will cost about $5 to $8 dollars per square foot.

Hickory Flooring

Hickory wood works great in more high-traffic areas of your home because it’s a very durable type of flooring. It has exceptional color variation and is a great bargain. Expect to pay about $3 to $8 per square foot for hickory wood flooring.

Walnut Flooring

Walnut wood flooring is durable and can withstand things like pet scratches better than another soft wood flooring like pine. It is a more exotic wood choice, which means it’ll be a bit more expensive than both oak and hickory flooring.

Walnut flooring will cost about $6 to $10 per square foot.

Cost of Flooring Installation

Depending on the type of flooring installation you choose, the cost will vary widely. Here are different types of installations and what you should expect to pay for each.

Float Installation

Float installation using engineered wood is the cheapest way to install hardwood floors. Manufacturers have very specific warranty requirements for floating a floor. Some may not allow for this type of installation using their product.

This option will cost around $6 per square foot but will vary depending on the type of wood you choose. Be careful to follow all National Wood Floor Association rules when installing using this method.

Nail Installation

This installation method involves attaching solid wood flooring by using nails. This requires that you have wooden subfloor, so the wood planks can be nailed into something.

So if you have a wood subfloor, this is a great option. Otherwise, you’ll have to consider the cost of installing a wooden subfloor before you can install the actual flooring. This method will cost about $4 per square foot, depending on the type of wood you choose.

Glue Installation

Glue installation involves gluing down the solid wood of your choosing to a subfloor that typically isn’t wood. So if you don’t have a wooden subfloor and you want to use solid wood flooring, this is your best option over concrete.

Glue installation of solid wood will cost about $4 per square foot, prices varying depending on the type of wood you choose.
