How do I pick a high quality Engineered Wood flooring?

May 14, 2018 By Oak & Broad Team

With all the brands of Engineered wood flooring available now it can at times become confusing what your best option is. There are a few things you can look for to help tell if the product you are considering for your home is a good quality. Remember to talk with your wood flooring installer before making a decision. Their eyes and experience may see things in the flooring samples that you may miss.

Engineered Hardwood Floor Plank Lengths Matter As Much As Width

Plank lengths – Lots of Engineered wood flooring comes in very short lengths. A floor with plank lengths from 12″ to 60″ is going to look like patchwork to many observers. Especially if your rooms are larger or have high ceilings. Look for floors with minimum lengths of at least 24″. Using a natural mix of wood plank lengths up to 96″ or even 120″ will help ensure your Engineered wood floor looks beautiful and has a natural flow. Once the floors are installed you cant go back and change these lengths without tearing out the floor. This portion of your decision processed deserves careful deliberation.

Thin Engineered Plank Hardwood Floors Will Usually Be Low Quality

Plank thickness – Thin floor planks will have tiny wear layers. Tiny wear layers usually cant be refinished. That means when its typically time to refinish your wood floors you will instead be paying to rip them out, buy new ones, and then pay for installation again. Quality Engineered wood floors will last a very very long time allowing you to refinish and service them for years to come. If your flooring provider isn’t talking with you about this feature of their product you should consider why.

Unfinished Engineered Hardwood Flooring Is Perfect For Almost Any Project

Finish Options – Engineered wood flooring is available unfinished now. Many times it can become confusing when sales people or contractors will use the terms engineered flooring and prefinished interchangeably. Just because a wood floor is Engineered does not mean it only comes prefinished. Being able to install your Engineered wood floors and then still pick a custom stain to be applied on site is one of the greatest advantages of modern Engineered wood flooring. Not to mention you can install it in humid climates and basements.
