Hosting a Party When You Have Wooden Flooring

September 30, 2019 By Oak & Broad Team

Did someone say party?

Yep—you heard right!

Who doesn’t love a good party? It’s even more fun to host and what better time to celebrate than a renovation, home remodeling or housewarming?

Is it okay to host a party with wooden flooring?

It’s normal to feel nervous about inviting people over when you’ve got expensive hardwood flooring. You probably think several times about walking around your own house too—don’t worry, you’re not alone—but with other people, there’s no knowing.

Hardwood floors are sturdy and can last you decades, but it’s true that they’re prone to damage and wear from neglect. It’s even riskier to have multiple people over, which can include kids other than your own.

Not everyone respects spaces and interiors or even thinks twice about possible damage—so being worried about hosting is perfectly okay. But with these tips you can host a great party and preserve your floors at the same time:

1) Prevention is better than cure—so prep your furniture before calling people over

You can be as careful as you like when living around your hardwood floors, but even the sturdiest walnut flooring or light-colored white oak hardwood floors can look worn out with scratches. Put felt pads or any soft layering on the bottom of all your furniture so that if they’re moved around, your floors don’t bear the brunt of the drags.

2) Clean up thoroughly before and after

This will not only help you spruce up the place before your guests come over, it will also help you be wary of any spillage, dirt or stains that take place during the party. When you clean up, you can rearrange furniture at will too, making it easier to deflect any damage.

3) Use rugs, carpets, mats, and floor cushions

Especially in areas where guests will be crowding, walking and moving around a lot, rugs and mats can make a major difference. Scruff marks and scratches from shoes can largely be avoided if you’re able to protect areas that are likely to see heavy traffic.

Use-rugs

See if it’s possible to suggest a shoe-free gathering, which is manageable with close friends and intimate gatherings. Keep shoe racks outside and make a show of removing shoes before entering if you don’t want to say it explicitly. However, you can’t always control how people dress and behave, so precaution is your best bet.

Hardwood floors are fairly durable, even if they require a little extra maintenance. So what are you waiting for? Get the home of your dreams and invite loved ones to be a part of this transformation! You can contact us for a consultation here.
